El Paso sits on the western tip of Texas, where Texas, New Mexico and Old Mexico meet. It is the largest international metroplex in the world and lies at the crossroads of Interstate 10 and Interstate 25 making it a true gateway to many exciting Southwestern destinations. We are easy to get to and on your way to everywhere! IMG_0607Since the early days when Spanish Conquistadors arrived at the banks of the Rio Grande in 1598, to today, with the millions of visitors who come here on a yearly basis, El Paso seamlessly blends cultures and traditions: from the historic Old West to the colors of Mexico, from the heritage of Native Americans to the beauty of our desert sun, which shines over 300 days a year! With an average daytime temperature of 60 degrees F in the winter and an average daytime temperature of 95 degrees F in the summer, it’s rare to have a day in El Paso when the sun does not shine. From the Camino Real (Royal Road) which connected Mexico City and Santa Fe, to the Butterfield Trail, a major stagecoach passage from St. Louis to San Francisco, transportation has always been an important thread woven throughout El Paso’s rich history. In September of 1928 10,000 El Pasoans turned out for the dedication ceremony of their first Municipal Airport. In 1968 El Paso became the first in the nation to have a 130 foot air traffic control tower and in 2000 became the first Air Traffic Control Tower in the nation to operate with STARS radar system.

The El Paso International Airport has been committed to being at the forefront of the latest aviation technology for over 80 years and has been fortunate to be linked to an impressive past by maintaining a portion of the Butterfield Trail on its property. El Paso is also the home of NASA’s Training Center for Shuttle Astronauts which practice landings on simulated shuttle aircraft by astronauts preparing to venture into outer space. The El Paso International Airport is located 6 miles east of downtown El Paso and 1.7 miles north of Interstate 10 at Airway Blvd. Exit 25.

  • Explore Downtown El Paso with a self-guided walking tour which takes you on a stroll through the historic architectural landmarks and sites in Downtown El Paso (about 90 minutes).
  • Hike, bike, climb or run the rugged terrain of the Franklin Mountain State Park. The 37 square miles of desert wilderness, scrub vegetation and open space has 125 miles of multi-use trails, making it the largest state park in an urban setting.
  • Learn about the exotic animals from around the world at the bigger and better El Paso Zoo. An expansive green space accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) with family friendly attractions such as the African Star Train and the Hunt Family Desert Spring.
  • Take a memorable ride on an aerial cable car at the Wyler Aerial Tramway, and experience a vista of the vast and stark beauty of the southwest with a 7,000 mile view of three states and two nations.

Activities Just Outside El Paso:

  • Take a drive down historic Highway 28 to the La Vina Winery and Zin Valle Vineyards, for a family friendly adventure that’s relaxing, full of wonderful scenery and wine that will make your taste buds dance.
  • Drive out to one of the most historical sites in Texas, Hueco Tanks State Historic Park. Known for its pictographs and use as a stagecoach stop along the old Butterfield trail, its a great place to take the family for bouldering, hiking, rock art and bird tours.

pico de gioVenture out into the heart of El Paso for a real Mexican dinner or follow celebrity chefs to some great favorites like L&J Café or El Paso’s legendary Chico’s Tacos. Pay a visit to the University of Texas at El Paso, established in 1914, and watch the UTEP Miners score a touchdown at the Sun Bowl Stadium. There you can also visit one of the top basketball facilities in the southwest, the Don Haskins Center, named after legendary UTEP men’s basketball coach Don Haskins. Or catch the San Diego Padres minor league, El Paso Chihuahuas, play in the Southwest University Ball Park downtown. Whatever you’re in the mood for, there is always something to do in El Paso.
